What is TOTP?

TOTP is an acronym for “time-based one-time password.” A TOTP is generated by software installed on your phone, unlike a regular OTP that is sent to you by email or SMS. This TOTP is only valid for a brief time (typically 30 seconds) before being renewed. Learn how to use TOTP to log into Kite by reading the instructions below.

How to enable TOTP in the Zerodha Mobile app?

You can enable TOTP through the below-given steps,

  • Log into Kite and select ‘My Profile’ from the drop-down menu under your client ID in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

  • Click on ‘Password & Security.

  • Then click on ‘Enable 2-step TOTP’.

  • Enter the OTP received on your registered email ID.

  • Install Google® Authenticator (or Microsoft® Authenticator or Authy) on your phone from Play Store or App Store

  • Select ‘Scan a barcode’ under the add account option and click on ‘Begin’.

  • Allow your phone’s camera to access the bar code displayed on Kite’s profile page. The account will be added to your authenticator app once you scan it. Click on ‘Enable’ after entering the OTP from the Kite app and your password.

  • Once you click on ‘Enable’ you’ll get a notification confirming the TOTP set up.

  • You will have to enter the TOTP shown on your authenticator app instead of PIN on your next login.

Why is TOTP necessary?

Fraudsters create phishing (fake) websites that look and feel like the login pages for prominent stock brokers’ trading platforms. These websites are then sent to naïve investors by SMS, e-mail, and social media, using contact information acquired from a variety of sources. Unsuspecting investors then click on these links, which take them to a false website that looks exactly like the login pages for the trading platforms they are familiar with, where they enter their login credentials (username, password, PIN, and other bits of information). So as a solution to this, TOTP helps to add an extra layer of security to keep all your information safe.
