Apart from this, the Magh Mela, happening along with the Sangam in Praygraj, is the third important bath occasion of Mauni Amavasya. Pilgrims come from all over the country to take a dip in these holy waters. The month of Magh is of great importance in the Hindu calendar, much like the month of Karthik. So taking a holy bathe on Mauni Amavasya is of utmost importance to devotees.

Importance of Mauni Amavasya

This year, the event is of more significance since the planets have aligned in a unique position. On the day of Mauni Amavasya, the Shravan Nakshatra and moon align with six planets, so the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Guru, Venus and Saturn align together in Capricorn. This alignment is called the Mahodaya Yoga. It is believed that taking a dip in Kumbh or Ganga waters is considered auspicious during this occasion. Devotees will fast during the entire day, and Sir Yoga and Punya Kaal will be observed for 2 to 5 minutes during the day.

Belief behind Mauni Amavasya (Mauni Amavasya Vrat Katha)

The belief behind Mauni Amavasya’s observance is that during the Amavasya Tithi of Magh month, the Gods reside in Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswathi’s waters. So bathing in these holy waters during this occasion is considered to be auspicious. Devotees will look to do some form of charity after the bath since it is virtuous and amplifies the bath’s effects. So, on the Amavasya day, devotees will donate sesame seeds, sesame oil, amla, warm clothes, etc. after the bath devotees observe a silent fast throughout the day.

How to fast on Mauni Amavasya? (Mauni Amavasya Vrat Vidhi)

Silent fasting is done to keep the mind calm during the new moon day of Magh month. The silence is used to calm down the mind and meditate on God for the whole day. By doing this, it is believed that negativity is completely removed from one’s mind. Even if you cannot observe a silent fast, it is essential that you remain calm and do not get angry or express your anger on anything to anyone. This step is more critical than the silent fast.
